Head coach of the 2012 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Champions at Tufts, Tina McDavitt Mattera has guided the Jumbos to six NCAA appearances overall. Entering the 2016 season, she is in her 13th year leading the program.
The 2012 national championship was the first NCAA title won by a women's team at Tufts. Mattera was selected National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Coach of the Year that season. Last fall, she brought the Jumbos back to the NCAA Championship Game for the fourth time (2018, 2016, 2012, 2008).
Now in her 16th year, Coach Mattera has built Tufts Field Hockey into one of the elite programs in the country. In 2018, she directed the Jumbos to a 19-3 record that included NCAA and conference runner-up finishes. In 2016 she led Tufts to its second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship and into the NCAA Championship Game. She was selected as the NFHCA's Regional Coach of the Year. Last season, Tufts' final ranking of #4 in the NFHCA poll marked the 10th time in the last 12 seasons that the Jumbos finished among the top 15 teams in the nation.
The program's eight NCAA appearances under Coach Mattera also include a run to the NCAA championship game in 2008 and to the NCAA semi-finals in 2009. Tufts won its first-ever NESCAC championship under her guidance in 2009.
Entering the 2018 season, Mattera ranked eighth on the NCAA Div. III winningest active coaches list and 12th on the winningest all-time coaches list with a .768 percentage. She became the Jumbo program's all-time leader in coaching victories in 2015 and now has a 211-61 overall mark (77.7 winning percentage).
The Tufts program has a 181-43 (.808) record over the last 12 seasons. In 2008, Tufts had the best winning percentage in the NCAA's Division III with their 19-2 record (.905). Following that with an 18-2 mark in 2009, the Jumbos went 19-2 again in 2012. They tied the school record for wins in a season with a 19-3 mark in 2016 and again with last season's 19-3 finish. Tufts has a 98-19 (.838) record in the conference since the 2008 season.
Five players recruited to Tufts by Coach Mattera have earned NFHCA First Team All-America honors in recent seasons. Issy Del Priore received the accolade in back-to-back seasons (2017-18) and was the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2017. Emily Cannon (2012-13), Tamara Brown (2009-10) and Margi Scholtes (2008-09) are also Jumbos who were first team All-Americans in consecutive years. Taylor Dyer was honored in 2010. Dyer was selected as NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 and Scholtes won the award in 2009. Brown was named NESCAC Player of the Year for both 2009 and 2010. She finished her career as Tufts' all-time leading scorer with 78 goals and 26 assists. This past April, Brown was inducted into the Tufts Athletics Hall of Fame.
Mattera's Jumbos achieve academically and in the community as well. Fifteen members of the 2018 squad earned Division III National Academic Squad honors from the NFHCA for carrying grade point averages of 3.30 or higher. Former Jumbo Annie Artz received 2017 Academic All-America honors, while last year's squad produced seven Academic All-NESCAC recipients (3.50 GPA or better). The team has an excllent 3.428 cumulatve grade point average. During the 2018-19 year, Tufts Field Hockey hosted a Girls in Sports day for Big Sisters of Masschusetts Bay. They also held a clinic for adult Special Olympians in Athens, Greece during their international trip this past June.
NESCAC's Coach of the Year in 2008 and in 2009, Mattera was hired as the sixth coach of Tufts Field Hockey in June 2004. A 2000 Boston University graduate, she was a four-year standout and captain of the 1999 team. She led the Terriers to an undefeated America East Conference championship that season.
An assistant coach at Holy Cross prior to Tufts, Mattera won two Massachusetts state championships while playing for the Walpole High School team in 1994 and 1995. As a member of US Field Hockey's national indoor team, she won a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in December 2005.
Coach Mattera and her husband Chuck have two daughters - Lucy and Maddie - and live in Wakefield.
Tufts University field hockey head coach Tina Mattera has announced that Hannah Richard has joined the Jumbos as the team’s new assistant coach this month.
Richard comes to Tufts with four years of Division I coaching experience at Holy Cross and Bucknell, where she was involved in all aspects of the program. As an assistant at Bucknell from 2014-16, she was part of a coaching staff that helped the Bison win a conference championship and earn Patriot League Staff of the Year honors. During two seasons as the first assistant at Holy Cross, Richard helped coach the Crusaders to their first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2006.
The Program Director and Coach of Lead the Way Field Hockey in Rhode Island since December 2017, Richard graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2015. She played on two Wildcat teams that won American East Conference championships. Scoring 29 career goals, she was an All-Conference selection on the field and received America East Academic Honor Roll recognition in class.
Richard has a Master’s of Science degree in Athletic Administration from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, which she received in 2016.
Annie Lahey enters her fourth full season as the Assumption College field hockey head coach in 2014. Lahey was promoted to a full-time position in the spring of 2013. Lahey posts a 16-35 overall record as head coach of the field hockey team.
During her tenure as head coach, Lahey has enjoyed both individual success, being named Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year after the 2012 season, as well as the success of her players on the field. She has guided two players to All-Rookie Team selections (Paige Anderson 2011, Kiley Colucci) and seven players to Northeast-10 All-Conference recognition.
Lahey has also guided her players to success not only on the field but to accolades off the field. These honors include the 2014 Francis J. Grimaldi Award (Sadie Oliver), the 2013 Albert S. Banx Memorial Award (Kathy Moffett), and Scholar of Distinction recognition (Abigal Heroth (2013, 2014). Lahey also helped Moffett to lead the nation in defensive saves in 2012.
